You have the experience and the education. You are a perfect fit for the job. You have a résumé that looks good and that you’ve either spent countless hours writing or spent hard-earned money having a professional write for you.
Why didn’t you get an interview? Why did you not even get a call back?
It could be something as simple as a missing key word or something more technical, like a table or chart embedded in the template of the résumé.
Tracy A. Morgan, a Certified Professional Résumé Writer (CPRW) and an advisor in Walsh College’s Career Services Department, will explain résumé dos and don’ts during a complimentary webinar titled, “New Year, New Résumé,” at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 26.
“It doesn’t matter how professional you are or how qualified you are. If you don’t represent yourself correctly on your résumé, you will have a difficult time getting to the next step in your career,” Morgan said.
During the webinar, attendees will:
- Learn about Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
- Understand why keywords are critical
- Learn to develop strong content
- Get answers to your questions during a Q&A
Applicant Tracking Systems software is now in use by the majority of human resources departments. There are more than 220 different versions of the software program, but its goal is pretty much the same: scan résumés for a variety of keywords and phrases, and separate the qualified candidates from the others. Even keeping this in mind, many job seekers are left frustrated because other technical issues, such as a header or a table, can cause a résumé to land in the trash rather than on the HR manager’s desk.
“You have to be very careful,” Morgan added. “Some companies that write résumés professionally use tables and templates, and they are not compatible with most ATS software. Résumés have to look good, be formatted correctly, and have the proper content to get through.”
Morgan will also discuss content, specifically what to leave in and what to take out of a résumé, such as always include a LinkedIn URL but there’s no need to include a home address.
Aesthetics are also important, as most hiring professionals will determine within 5 seconds whether they want to continue reading a résumé.
