Detroit SHRM Chapter Receives Prestigious SHRM Award for Advancing the HR Profession

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently awarded the Detroit SHRM chapter its prestigious EXCEL Gold Award for the chapter’s accomplishments in 2014.

The award is part of the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence, which aligns individual chapters and councils with SHRM’s goals. The award recognizes accomplishments and strategic activities and initiatives that enhance the human resources profession.

“Recognition for our Detroit SHRM chapter is a distinction received due to the contributions of both our members and partners. Working together we are helping one of the country’s hardest hit regions retool individuals, rediscover talent, and reinvent careers, so that employers can create even greater value for their customers,” said Joan M. Morehead, DSHRM chapter President.

The EXCEL award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, and each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that have to be met. Detroit SHRM will receive recognition in SHRM publications and conferences, a certificate of recognition, and special signage to display at its meetings and events.

EXCEL Gold level recognition was given to Detroit SHRM, in large part, due to its sustained success with the following key initiatives:

  • Systematically offering high-quality education and networking events in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.
  • Developing strategic partnerships with other professional organizations, and sharing information and extended reciprocal promotions, to decrease the cost of products and services for members.
  • Supporting worthy charitable and community outreach programs, including specifically by connecting with local businesses to solicit donations of up-to-date computers and software. Over 20 PCs were donated to the Harmony House to allow clients to update their resumes, conduct online job searches, gain access to needed services to regain balance and self-sufficiency.
  • Improving the chapter’s website to increase its reach to HR professionals across the State of Michigan, enhancing the SHRM brand, building membership, and leveraging new reach to share educational opportunities for members and non-members alike.
